Process development

Do you need a food processing operation optimised? Are you aware of the benefits of new technologies such as minimal processing, low temperation sterilisation, low energy heating, rapid drying, separation of low molecular weight compounds?

HortResearch develops novel and proprietary processes and technologies for specific needs. We have an extensive pilot plant for food processing development work that is also available for you if you wish to carry out your own trials.

Simulation provides a cost-effective way to trial new processes and to make "proof of concept" samples before you commit to a large investment in the manufacturing of new products.

This opportunity is available for clients with an interest in bioactive ingredients and/or the development and formulation of new products where functionality, taste, aroma and appearance are paramount.

We can screen your product, raw material by products or waste stream for bioactive compounds that may be recoverable and valuable. We have conducted screening on:

  • Fruit germplasm
  • Traditional Chinese medicinal herbs
  • Extremophiles
  • Fungal collections.

Whole fruit and vegetables as well as the waste products from the manufacture of many plant-based foods, i.e. skins, seeds and peels, contain phytonutrients with health promoting benefits.

We are leading the way in the extraction and concentration of bioactive ingredients from horticultural produce.

We can assist clients both in the extraction of these compounds and with product development, including processing technologies to produce novel and added value ingredients and foods.

Our superior high rate, low temperature drying processes give better quality, flavour, colour and shape at a lower cost.

Herbs, lemons, apricots, kiwifruit, apples and carrots have been successfully dried using this technique. This facility allows us to produce concept samples for your market or consumer evaluation.
