HortResearch is the major horticultural researcher in the Marlborough region, famous for its wine. It is the only crown research institute with staff in Blenheim, where we are partners in the Marlborough Wine Research Centre.
Our research is primarily viticultural, including the study of grapevine diseases, irrigation management and the use of vineyard mulches for sustainable production. However, research is also carried out on other horticultural crops including apples and olives.
HortResearch staff at the research centre have close links with both the local and national wine industry. They share their campus with the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT), a tertiary wine education provider offering a Bachelor's degree in viticulture and oenology in association with Lincoln University.
The present campus opened in December 2003 and has a wine sensory room and an 84-seat theatre for common use.
