Science programme: Industrial biotechnology
Food allergies are an important health problem, with clinical reactions to food being found in 8% of children and 2% of adults. In the U.S. , Europe and Japan , it is estimated that 20% of the population [or 150 million people] have some form of allergy. Many consumers are now demanding more information on where and how their food is produced and what is in it.
HortResearch focuses on the discovery and production of key fruit allergens to deliver improved quality of life for food allergic people. Our team have already identified variants of known proteins that are involved in allergenic responses to fruit in humans.
We currently work on:
- The production of recombinant proteins for IgE testing, examination of structure, and for use in developing new diagnostic procedures.
- The development of new approaches to link this data to functions in plants.
- The development of a New Zealand consortium to research food allergies in collaboration with EUROPREVALL (a recently funded EU wide FP6 programme).
